Save the Islamic Academy of Manchester – Appeal Update

We have had a number of requests for an update regarding our campaign to Save the Islamic Academy of Manchester. The latest situation is as follows:

– The date when the Planning and Highways Committee will consider the redevelopment plans has not yet been set by the Council. Hence, no decision has been made on Church Convert’s planning application yet.

– Church Converts have granted an extension of 3 months on the current lease up to 15th February 2014.

We will keep you informed of any further developments and would like to thank all of you for your support.

Sample Comments:

  • I strongly oppose the council’s decision to close this Mosque. We use it regularly and it serves not only as a place of worship for us but also helps the local community in various ways.
  • The Mosque is a great facility for all the local Muslim community for performing our religious duties. It is also a cultural heritage for Manchester. The place has always been a worship place serving Christians and Muslims and therefore its status should remain as a place of worship. I strongly oppose council’s decision to close this charitable organisation/religious public trust.

Please change them according to your own views and don’t only use the above two. There are just some points you can use when opposing the application. We need your help to save this Mosque for our community and future generations.

Islamic Academy, English Heritage and MCC

Since our campaign started to save The Islamic Academy of Manchester, a number of people have asked about what actions we took previously to try and avert this situation. This letter from 2002 (from English Heritage North West to Heritage Lottery Fund) highlights the proposal we had developed with English Heritage and Manchester City Council, and our financial commitment to save the Welsh Baptist Church.
